Panthers make college decisions

Five athletes sign a commitment to colleges for Fall on May 4.

It was a great day to be a Panther. As a welcome relief from last year’s virtual signings, Panther Nation gathered at 2 p.m. in SHHS gymnasium to witness five classmates commit to the colleges of their choice in person, socially and safely distanced of course.

Colin Martin will continue his baseball and academic career at Tyler Junior College, where he plans to make gains on and off the diamond. Coach Peterson recognized Colin’s hard work and multiple talents, including juggling. Colin’s family and friends cheered as he signed on the dotted line, securing his spot with the Apache Tribe.

Peterson beamed as he introduced Blake Barlow, a multi-sport athlete, as one of his players on the road to secondary education success. Barlow will attend Richland College in the Fall and has committed to playing baseball for the Ducks. His family gathered together in support of this momentous occasion.

But, it was LETU that racked up today, signing three Panthers to trade in their paws for the sting of the Yellowjackets. Alyssa McClung will join the Jackets Softball squad in the Fall, and Cameron Rhodes and Evie Gee will hit the track on pace to lead LETU to track and field victory. Coach Dee Lewis reminded all these athletes that hard work and dedication are keys to success. His message reminded all in attendance that trying new things, being open to change, and being coachable can lead to a promising future.  Coach Mayfield proudly presented Alyssa McClung, reminding her and all in attendance to work to please God, not man in all things.

Weston Griffis started the ceremony by reminding all of these athletes that this is the beginning of a great future, rooted in a strong past. No matter where each Panther goes, they will always remember to #SwingtheHammer each and every day.
