A list of the cancellations this year compared to last year.

Change is the new constant for 2020. And, Corona has not discriminated. The effects have hit academics, social events, and athletics.

To start, the long standing Red River Rivalry against White Oak was cancelled, which meant- No Smoke the Oak Spirit Week and no crosstown Battle of the Bands. But, Spring Hill Athletic Director Weston Griffis and the administrative staff worked diligently to find a worthy opponent for week 3 with Community Nevada.

“We’ve had multiple games cancelled or rescheduled,” Varsity player Dylan Murdick said. “We had a replacement game scheduled last minute only a couple weeks ago.”

UIL academics are also on a waiting pattern. Coaches are meeting and preparing teams, but the face to face competitions are not yet confirmed.

“Most of the pre-district competitions are being moved to virtual,” UIL Academic Coordinator for SHHS Amy Blalock said. “Our school usually competes in an invitational at Hallsville High School and Pine Tree High School. Both of those districts are waiting for approval to have in person meets.”

The SH Education Foundation has postponed the Distinguished Alumni Awards according to Patti Miller. They also had to forgo the Back to School gathering traditionally held at Chick-Fil-A. The Spring Hill Alumni Association has also had to change the Homecoming schedule and events.

“The Car Show is our annual fundraiser that helps to provide scholarships to 2-3 Seniors, Alumni Association President Annette Wolverton said. “It has been cancelled due to Covid-19.”
