On Friday, November 2, the SHHS Cross Country Team was sent off in a parade fanfare to showcase 8 qualifying runners in the state meet. I spoke with Freshman, Nick Bodenheimer on Monday, after he placed in the Top 3 Freshman for our area in the state.

Nick Bodenheimer, 3rd in the State for Cross Country Freshman 4A

Nick began running for Coach Alford in the seventh grade, and never considered not joining the high school team. “The great leadership of upperclassmen like Hayden Bray and an encouraging coach like Coach Alford made my decision easy.” Bodenheimner added, “Plus, getting a varsity spot as a Freshman is awesome!” When I asked Nick about his experience at state, he giggled in reflection. “Well, we have never seen competition like that. I wouldn’t say I am surprised, but more impressed at the quality of runners and the talent in Texas.”  Nick learned a lifelong lesson at this meet- don’t ever forget that even though you may be good, the competition is working hard to be great. Don’t underestimate anyone.  “Eye opening” was how Nick recollected the experience.

The team finished 11th in the state, not bad for the first showing for this young team at a state event. The Panther’s Paw Press give kuddos to these boys and girls and all of their efforts.
