Empowering women has been an important theme throughout history. As a nation, America has come a long way, building opportunities for women. Other countries have gone through changes as well, advocating their rights. Organizations exist with the goal of making women’s voices heard and supporting them. One such organization, which has greatly influenced America and other countries, is Zonta.

Zonta began in Buffalo, New York in 1919 with Mary Jenkins as the first president. At the time, women’s rights were still primitive. The women involved in the first Zonta groups were among the first generation of women to receive a college education. In later years, they adopted their colors, and their slogan “empowering women”. One of the most famous women involved in Zonta was Amelia Earhart. She was actively involved and had a strong voice for women’s rights until her disappearance.

Today Zonta has groups all over America. Z-Club is the name of local branches. Z-Club of Longview is currently hosting multiple fundraisers and donations such as Free the Girls, a prom dress boutique, and the upcoming tailgate party. Free the Girls is an organization that ships bras to third world countries for people to sell. It gives women a way to make a life for themselves after escaping sex trafficking. Zonta is also requesting new or gently used formal dresses. They will set up a boutique for girls who do not have the money to buy a prom dress. Lastly. the tailgate party will take place on November 10th. Multiple fundraisers for women will be represented, and people will have a chance to support. Students of Spring Hill can donate bras, prom dresses, and attend events to support this inspiring organization.
